netPI as USB-Device-Server based on raspbian
#11
Have you added a Volume from the host?

Hi Frank,

I have already plugged in the serial converter when I powered my netPI. Did you do the same?

The converted is mapped on netPI's Host Linux (I can see it with a special netPi debug firmware) to device /dev/ttyUSB0 automatically. So I mapped only this device into the container when I started it.

Here is my dmesg trace when I call it in the container

No this was no necessary.

Please keep in mind that mapping volumes from netPI's host Linux is not possible at all netPI and disabled.

This is my log file when I start with the server with parameter -r to let him create a log file

Tue Jul 3 12:35:06 2018 LOG_INFO >>> Starting VirtualHere USB Server v3.6.6 (Built: May 10 2018, 20:48:43)<<<
Tue Jul 3 12:35:06 2018 LOG_INFO Using configuration /root/config.ini
Tue Jul 3 12:35:06 2018 LOG_INFO Server licensed to=unlicensed max_devices=1
Tue Jul 3 12:35:06 2018 LOG_INFO Using large URB's
Tue Jul 3 12:35:06 2018 LOG_INFO Listening on all network interfaces at TCP port 7575
Tue Jul 3 12:35:06 2018 LOG_ERR Error 1 opening device (/root/bus_usb_001_004) file descriptor, Operation not permitted
Tue Jul 3 12:35:06 2018 LOG_ERR Error 1 opening device (/root/bus_usb_001_003) file descriptor, Operation not permitted
Tue Jul 3 12:36:12 2018 LOG_INFO 10.11.5.18 connected as connection 1

Tue Jul 3 12:36:32 2018 LOG_INFO Connection 1 successfully removed (reason:timeout)

But even with the opening device error the client on my windows machine finds the port and connects to it as you can see.

Frank, maybe I made a mistake.

On the client I get a device tree shown ... first entry is a small computer named "USB Hubs" followed by an entry "USB Hub" which refers to the my netPI where I can right click with the mouse to it showing my the netPI address: e.g. "NTB827EB237AC1-2.local.:7575 (10.11.5.18:7575)"

Anything else that should normally appear in this client dialog? More I can't see. I am wondering if also the virtual port should appear normally too, am I right?

Yeah you should see the name of the USB device wich is connected to the netPi (e.g. SerialConverter) like in the link below:

https://www.virtualhere.com/usb_client_software

So you have a connection from Client to Server, but all connected devices are missing...

Frank I came a little further.

I used the program strace to debug into the vhusbarm program. I saw that it wants to access the devices /dev/bus and the /dev/console too.

So what I did was starting a new container from the debianConfusedtretch image with
/dev/ttyUSB0
/dev/bus
/dev/console

also been mapped into the container.

Now the client shows next to the USB Hub entry two additional entries and when I clicked onto these ports it started to install a virtual USB driver. Can your confirm on your side?

Seems to work so far. But the System is not able to use plug&play. All connected USB devices have to be plugged into the netPi before booting the netPi. Otherwise VirtualHere and Docker are not able to share the devices in the container and VirtualHere client. So you have to know all devices you want to use in your countainer before setting up the container.
Is there a way to link all connected USB devices to a container automaticaly? Because we want to use 60 usb-serial-converters and that means it is a lot of linking work to do. Or is it possible to use a config file by adding a container insted of manualy specify all settings?

Thanks so far, Frank
